Public transport maps take several forms: as a stop map, as a depiction of a diversion, and as an interactive network map. The content has to work for print as well as on digital devices. The task is recurring production with different outputs and a shared technical foundation.
Once the same map work serves many transport companies and regions, tools and technical delivery become parts of the same system. Changes to stops, lines, or spatial assignments must be editable; the map and production services generated from them also need infrastructure on which they are available.
The decision
I develop dedicated BC tools for Baumgardt and operate the cluster for the map and production services. This responsibility includes the drawing tool, the stop manager, and the geocoder. The software for the specialist work and the infrastructure for its outputs therefore sit in one clearly named technical scope.
My role runs from further developing these tools through to operating the environment the services run on. The case connects specialised applications, deployments, and operations for the connected transport companies. Together these elements describe the technical responsibility of map production.
The build
The three tools cover different layers of production. The drawing tool belongs to work on the map image, the stop manager to administering stops, and the geocoder to spatial assignment. Together they form a technical tool chain for stop maps, diversions, and interactive network maps.
On the operations side, the cluster carries the map and production services. Technically this connection means that an edited data or map state does not end at the tool: it can be provided as a service for the intended print and digital outputs. Which output is produced remains part of the same production environment.
The applications and the cluster mark two different technical responsibilities: tools support production, services provide their outputs. I develop and operate both sides and thus keep editing, delivery, and operations in the same responsibility.
In operation
The operating scope covers public network maps for more than 20 regions and over 80 services. The figures name the real size of the technical surface on which tools, map production, and cluster operations come together. Regions and services describe two different layers.
In ongoing operations my responsibility remains visible on both sides. I continue to develop the BC tools and operate the cluster the services run on. Technical changes to the production base and the availability of its map and production services therefore belong to the same case.
